Breath Analysis

The IMSMAAT Breathanalyser is very easy to use, light and inconspicuous, with a good attractive design and great features. As long as the batteries are properly installed, the Breathanalyser is always powered up and ready to work. You can check if the batteries are properly installed by the visibility of the numbers displayed on the LCD (liquid crystal display).

Fig.1

PERFORMING A BREATH ANALYSIS

1. Press and HOLD the "TEST/POWER" button. The green, yellow, & red lights, will sequentially flash, followed by the green light remaining ON. The IMSMAAT is now ready to analyse your breath.

Fig.2

2. DO NOT place the Analyser in your mouth. Position it 4-5 cm in front of your lips, take a deep breath, pucker your lips and exhale firmly and naturally until you have emptied your lungs (whilst HOLDING down the TEST/POWER button). Exhaling closer than recommended will result in augmented readings. Exhaling further than recommended will result in reduced readings.

3. Within 4-6 seconds view the result whilst continuing to HOLD down the "TEST/POWER" button:
*Green Light ON: alcohol level is below 0.02%
*Yellow Light ON: alcohol level above 0.02% but below 0.05%
*Red & Yellow Lights ON together: alcohol level above 0.05%

4.1 Ensure that the "TEST/POWER" button remains pressed throughout the entire test.

4.2 Ensure that you deliver a clean dry stream of air when exhaling into the Vent at the top of the unit.

4.3 The way to maintain a consistent flow of air each time you use your IMSMAAT Breathanalyser is to extend your index finger beyond the Exhalation Vent and place the tip of your finger against your bottom lip. See Fig.2 above.

The Breathanalyser works using an alcohol sensor which is located inside the Exhalation Vent. This sensor detects alcohol ions, and by exhaling into the sensor, it will assess the amount of alcohol ions present in your breath.

The alcohol sensor needs to go through a "Warm-up" period before it is able to process alcohol ions. This "Warm-up" period is typically 5 seconds, but if the Tester has not been used for some time, or if new batteries have recently been installed, it may need more time. If this situation arises, press and HOLD the "TEST/POWER" button for 10-20 seconds, release the button for 20 seconds, and press and HOLD again. Repeat the cycle until the sensor has fully warmed up and the Breathanalyser is ready to be used.

When the "TEST/POWER" button is pressed and HELD, the Green, Yellow, and Red LED lights will sequentially flash (signalling a warm-up period), until the Green Light is lit continuously. A continuously lit Green Light signals that the Breathanalyser is ready to test for alcohol ions. At times, pressing and HOLDING the "TEST/POWER" button will directly lead to a continuously lit Green Light, signalling that the sensor is fully warmed up and ready to be used.

After pressing and HOLDING the "TEST/POWER" button, followed by a steady Green Light, the Breathanalyser is ready to test for alcohol ions. Place the Analyser directly in front of your mouth (about 4-5cm away). Take a deep breath and exhale firmly and naturally into the Exhalation Vent until you have emptied your lungs, whilst HOLDING the "TEST/POWER" button, and wait for the result (Result Response Time, typically 4 seconds). If the Green Light remains ON, the alcohol level is below 0.02%. If the Yellow Light turns ON, the alcohol level is above 0.02% but below 0.05%. If both the Yellow and Red Lights turn ON, the alcohol level is above 0.05%. Ensure the "TEST/POWER" button is HELD DOWN throughout the Breath Analysis.

The Breathanalyser can be used for consecutive Breath Analyses, but care must be taken to allow for the ions present in the sensor from the previous test to fully dissipate, otherwise an incorrect result will be obtained. Wait at least 5 minutes ("Recovery Time"). Do not perform more than 3 tests per hour on very humid days. Placing the Tester in dry fresh flowing air will expedite the process. For optimum use, test your breath at least 20 minutes after your last drink, and 3 minutes after smoking (you can use the inbuilt countdown timer). Do not perform a Breath Analysis in polluted environments (smoke filled rooms, chemical workshops, etc) since the contaminants will ingress the Analyser and interfere with the sensor. It should be noted that in some cases it may take up to 2 hours after the last alcoholic drink for the body alcohol level to reach its maximum reading, and therefore during a trip back home your alcohol level may change. It can take over 10 hours for your BAC to return to zero. Some medications, intoxicants, and conditions, can increase the effects of alcohol. Some medications and intoxicants can affect your BAC reading since the natural chemical balance of the breath is altered. Each person has a different response to the consumption of alcohol (fat content, build, metabolism, etc), and therefore for some individuals the ability to drive safely could be jeopardised at a point below the recommended alcohol drinking rate.

Do not use the Flashlight during a Breath Analysis, or false readings may occur.

To maintain the sensitivity of the internal sensor, do not to subject the Breathanalyser to excessive shock and vibration. For the same reason, to avoid clogging the sensor, and also to avoid permanent damage, it is advisable to not allow liquids or contaminants inside the Exhalation Vent. Therefore, do not directly place the Breathanalyser in your mouth, spit into it, exhale moist air into it, spill liquids (e.g. wine, beer) or powders near the Exhalation Vent, expose the tester to strong gases (silicone compounds, sulphur, freon, etc) or smoke or sprays (including hair spray). When not in use, store the Analyser in a safe and clean environment. DO NOT use cleaning agents. Use a cloth lightly dampened with water to clean the Analyser.

The IMSMAAT Breathanalyser is to be used as an indicator of the range of your Blood Alcohol Concentration (BAC). The use of the IMSMAAT Breathanalyser as a reference, combined with responsible drinking habits, will enable the user to relax stress-free when out with friends.
