Drink driving
Over 400 road deaths are caused each year due to alcohol consumption at
high-risk levels, not to mention the over 7,700 serious alcohol related
road injuries requiring hospitalisation. Overall, nearly one third of
Australian road fatalities, both driver and pedestrian, occur as a result
of drinking alcohol at levels exceeding the recommended limit.
It has been found that the likelihood of crashing whilst driving a motor
vehicle can increase exponentially with the rate at which alcohol is consumed.
For example, the probability of crashing your car whilst having a BAC
of 0.05% is around twice that of when your BAC would be at zero. A doubled
increase may not sound like much, but as the BAC climbs the situation
changes drastically. At 0.1% BAC, the risk of crashing increases to around
7.5 times, and at 0.15%, it increases to as much as 25 times!
Only a small increase in blood alcohol concentration is necessary to cause
a large difference in a person's risk of danger whilst driving, not to
mention simply being a pedestrian! The main problem is that people usually
have no idea when their BAC is beyond the recommended limit. Most people
use their feelings as a gauge to determine what they think their BAC is,
but many people are already over the limit when they're feeling fine.
It is a scary thought that we're twice as likely to crash, even though
we say "…I feel o.k. so I must be under the limit". Now technology offers
us an opportunity to be a step ahead. Why risk crashing when you can know
your BAC range before the event? Why wait until an accident has occurred
to find out? With the IMSMAAT Breathanalyser, you can be smart on the
roads!
