Twelve Important Facts
Fact No. 1. Nearly one third of Australian road fatalities, both driver and pedestrian, occur as
a result of drinking alcohol at levels exceeding the recommended limit.
Fact No. 2. Over 25% of deaths caused by boating accidents (from 1992 to 2007) in N.S.W. have had
alcohol as a factor.
Fact No. 3. When a person has a BAC of 0.15%, they are twenty-five times more likely to have an
accident than when they have a BAC of zero!
Fact No. 4. Nearly one quarter of the people who have died in N.S.W. marine accidents related to
alcohol consumption were found to have a blood alcohol concentration of 0.15% or higher.
Fact No. 5. Most teenagers that drink alcohol do so to excess, often more than seven drinks at a time!
Fact No. 6. Over half of teenagers between the ages of fifteen and eighteen already drink alcohol,
and this number is on the rise.
Fact No. 7. Over 400 road deaths are caused each year due to alcohol consumption at high-risk levels.
Fact No. 8. Over 7,700 serious alcohol related road injuries requiring hospitalisation are caused each
year, affecting both drivers and pedestrians.
Fact No. 9. If an individual manning a marine vessel is tested as over 0.05%, they may be fined for more
than $1,000!
Fact No. 10. In 2003, 1634 people died on Australian roads.
Fact No. 11. Due to road crashes, 5 people die and about 60 people are seriously injured or disabled daily,
that is one casualty every 22 minutes.
Fact No. 12. Over 171,000 Australians have died in road crashes from the advent of motorisation to 2004.
